IAF and AccessPrivacy will hold a workshop entitled “PIPEDA, Ethics and the Use of Data Beyond Individuals’ Imagination” on 4 December 2015 in Toronto. Data is now recognised as a critical asset. Organisations increasingly seek to leverage “Big Data” assets to generate actionable insights to drive better performance, enhance efficiency and create new forms of value for participants in the digital economy. Organisations globally are beginning to consider how to respectfully treat data in a manner that fosters innovation but at the same time mitigates the array of privacy, legal and ethical risks associated with previously unimaginable secondary uses of data. The moderated workshop discussion will examine these issues in the Canadian context. In addition, the meeting will assess how PIPEDA’s accountability principles and emerging standards for data governance create an opportunity for organisations to demonstrate that their use of data is reasonable, appropriate and ethical.
